Resurrecting Bitcoin Private, forensically analyzing the raw historic block files, and driving most of the direction over the past few years hasn't been a straightforward, nor an easy path. I need to emphasize this hasn't been as simple as firing up some legacy node, parsing block files and instantaneously identifying the unshielding transactions that essentially put pause to BTCP when it was primed to lead the privacy coin corner of crypto.
It's been a multi-year forensic effort that only truly began in earnest in mid-2024. I gained access to the block data in late 2023 and was honestly not gaining analytical traction until I resolved to rewrite the legacy Java and Bitcore tools in Python. All I had were the raw block files and David Aker's initial analysis. No legacy documentation, no preserved configurations, no parameter files, and absolutely no clue where to start.
Extracting truth from a dead chain meant enduring an endless maze of trial and error. The early days were marked by painful offline parser experiments battling LevelDB limitations, forcing me to start from scratch repeatedly and find other avenues to derive any legible and useful data from the blockchain files. As mentioned, I found the legacy Java and Bitcore tools were of little use to me without all the parameters and configurations, so I built an entirely new, custom asynchronous Python node from scratch.
This required painfully reverse-engineering the chain's underlying structures byte-by-byte, battling through database crashes, many early false positives, and hunting down (or maybe more like brute-forcing) missing P2SH prefixes through sheer persistence.
The easy path would have been to wipe the slate clean, but the goal was always to protect the legitimate holders of BTCP. This meant scraping through 55.9 million UTXOs and mapping the "Swiss-cheese" data gaps up to block 680,000. I've had to trace the exact taint of the exploiters across 15,918 unique addresses—up to 813 hops deep—to ensure that the bad actor(s) are mathematically isolated and will be expunged, while innocent holders are surgically preserved.
Today, all of that forensic knowledge, thousands of hours, and approximately 10.5 billion tokens culminate in a mathematically provable, clean UTXO set, ready to breathe life into a modern Zebra-based node. The final step is in play: I'm waiting on one of the very few exchanges that are operational, that once listed BTCP, to confirm the addresses controlled by them. After this step, I'll upload the clean UTXO (genesis UTXO for the relaunched chain) to the query tool instead of the tainted UTXO at block height 680,000.
In between all of these thousands of hours dedicated to this passion project, life has happened. Loved ones pass, children are born, work pressures ebb and flow, regional wars flare, and we too grow older without realizing until the person in the mirror shows the signs of a life well lived.
Keep the faith & much love,
